Seeing people point out the unnecessary Sonic hate in the 2010s reminds me of how people would treat tycoon games during that time too. And I don’t like Sonic (the characters look kinda gross to me idk what it is.) so I’ll talk more about that.
There was an odd period where people would shit talk tycoon games and give them bad reviews as well. Thats fine and dandy if the game is shit its shit. But what gets me is that game footage they had was just them fucking around and not playing the game correctly. And they couldn’t really describe the game in a meaningful way outside “its boring and stupid why would anyone care about this!”. Why is it boring? Are there few customization options/ no variety? Are customers un-pleaseable no matter what? Do features not work properly? I remember on guy saying a game had too much micro managing and like? Thats the point of a tycoon game? Just say you too lazy and dipshit to play this game and go. I can’t help feel like companies started listening these morons because the last tycoon game I ever picked up had hardly any options for management or customization and was mostly about fixing disasters via action sequences. It was some Jurassic Park game. Nice idea for a tycoon but I don’t want to spend 90% of the time fixing storm damage and sniping dinosaurs. And the characters giving you missions would sabotage your shit if you ignored them. Imagine Sim Safari where the nature conservationist would bomb your campsite if she saw too many poached animals. Thats a dumb analogy b/c in Sim Safari people sort of do sabotage your shit if you don’t handle things, theres just a story appropriate reason that doesn’t make you hate them and they’ll stop if you give them jobs in your camp. I haven’t checked out the scene since because that Jurassic park game was just dreadful and not what I was looking for in a tycoon game.
Keep in mind this similar thing happened to point and click games. If you can still find the ye olde game reviews from the time, theres was some “I are no know what do if no shooty shooty” type articles. From then to now theres been a conga line of “any game thats not a fps or centered around violence is shit” that more people are calling out now. Not every game is [generic popular shooter] and thats ok.
