Idk what it is but pointless gore can sometimes cross over into being comedic. It could be real issue with the Saw movies past the 2nd one sometimes (making an abuser and his victim play chicken fight over a pit of upside-down lawn mowers Hoffman you FREAK). But yea sometimes its like the writers were trying way too hard to be disturbing with little to no set up and its like eye rolling. It worked for HTF because that was the point at least.
