Am I being crazy or has there been an aversion to writing actual romance plots for black women characters in recent years? At most they’ll be the disposable gf if they aren’t just plain omitted from romance plots. The last time I’ve seen something genuine was Final Space. Earlier this year I theorized that we’re seeing less romance in movies because they been getting more diverse and people don’t have interest in seeing more diverse romances. They just want straight young thin white/ light people performing the expected gender roles and you can’t branch too far from that. Its why fandoms were alluring because in a small way you could subvert that with cannon x oc art.
Thats one way to look at it but people are also getting fatigued with romance and expectations in real life. The average romance movie isn’t really… realistic or relatable anymore. At some point ether on the internet or irl real relationships just start to look like a self flogging or a humiliation ritual. I guess traditional romance stories are now out of touch? What makes something like Love and Deepspace enticing to millions?
